Province of Utrecht
At the Nieuwegein workshop, our customer is the Province of Utrecht. Utrecht, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein have been connected by a high-speed line since the mid-1980s. Tens of thousands of people use it daily. Since 2011, Stadler Service Nederland has been responsible for the maintenance of the express trams on behalf of the Province.

Our trams
The first express trams were built at the Swiss factory Schweizer Industries Gesellschaft (SIG). These trams weigh 37.5 tonnes and are 30 metres long. They can drive at up to 80 kilometres per hour.

In the near future, the SIG trams will be complemented by new trams built in Spain by Constructions’ y Auxiliar de Ferroparticles’ (CAF). These modern, low-floor trams operate on the brand-new Uithof line. They will no doubt be just as reliable as the SIG trams, as these trams will also be under the good maintenance of Stadler Service Nederland.

Our workshop
The express tram fleet of the Province of Utrecht is expanding and Stadler Service Nederland is expanding with it. In the new CAF trams, most systems are located in and on the roof. We are therefore building a new, ultramodern workshop with catwalks to make it possible to work on top of the trams. The new workshop will have no less than eight working tracks and will provide the most advanced working positions, systems and equipment. Think of a paternoster position for storage, a special cleaning track, a washing machine for turntables, various lift bridges, a paint spraying booth and catwalks with overhead contact line protection.

In short: the new workshop will be an environment where you, as a technician, can encounter many challenges. The new workshop will come into use in 2019. 


Working in Nieuwegein

Our work and our people
At Nieuwegein, maintenance mechanics, shift leaders and a RAMS engineer (who analyses faults, etc.) work on the trams themselves. In addition, we have administrative staff, a warehouse manager, a work preparer/planner, a business office manager and a location manager.

The work of the fitters is very varied. They:
•           perform maintenance tasks
•           replace wearing parts
•           repair damage
•           perform bogie overhauls
•           turn wheels with a pit wheel lathe
•           repair electronic and mechanical faults
•           replace interiors (e.g. after vandalism)
•           replace windows
•           remove graffiti
•           drive trams with faults to the workshop
•           identify faults
