CITYLINK TramTrain – Das Projekt
In January 2022, Stadler was awarded the largest contract in the company's history. Stadler has won an international tender held jointly by six transport companies from Germany and Austria for up to 504 vehicles as part of the "VDV TramTrain" project. In addition to vehicle production, the framework agreement also includes a maintenance contract with a duration of up to 32 years.

The first call-off is for 246 vehicles. The award of the contract marks the beginning of a long-standing partnership (until 2064) between Stadler and the TramTrain team, consisting of Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe GmbH, Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH, Saarbahn GmbH, Schiene Oberösterreich GmbH, Schiene Salzburg GmbH and Regional-Stadtbahn Neckar-Alb. Vehicles for the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft and Regional-Stadtbahn Neckar-Alb were purchased by Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (AöR). The CITYLINK is a modular, barrier-free light rail vehicle that was specifically designed to connect urban areas with the surrounding region without forcing passengers to switch trains (in accordance with the Karlsruhe model) in order to offer a comfortable journey. All of the vehicles in this project are based on the same platform and are 37 metres long and 2.65 metres wide. The three-car CITYLINK vehicles have standard equipment and multifunctional zones that can be flexibly configured. Depending on the operator, the Tram-Trains can also be fitted with custom equipment. The vehicles can be operated on EBO/EisbBBV-compliant and BOStrab/ StrabVO-compliant routes.
