Stadler wins first METRO contract in the US – 127 trains for Atlanta
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) announced their decision to award Stadler the contract for 127 METRO trains with two options of 25 additional trains each. For Stadler this is the first large METRO contract in the US and the largest ever order of vehicle units so far in the company’s history. The contract is valued at over 600 million US dollars. The new trains are intended for service to the world’s largest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
MARTA announced their decision to choose Stadler over other international competitors and award Stadler a contract for 127 METRO trains. The contract includes two options for 25 additional married pairs each. The contract is valued at over 600 million US dollars. In regards to units, this is the largest contract award for Stadler has received thus far.
The metropolis and media city Atlanta – also home to the Coca Cola company – runs one of the largest metro systems in the United States. With this contract MARTA now receives one of the most modern fleets. According to the contract, Stadler plans to deliver 127 married pair units with the first units being placed into service in Atlanta starting 2023.
MARTA has plans to name the new vehicles, which expand the current Stadler METRO product line, CQ400. The very energy efficient MARTA fleet vehicles typically operate in multiple tractions with up to four vehicles, at a speed of up to 113 km/h (70 mph). They are powered with 750 volt direct voltage by a third rail. Each train offers 128 seats, as well as a generous standing area. The trains, which are level throughout, are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are easily accessible for persons with reduced mobility. The bright interior design with wide aisles and additional LED lights above the doors, makes the 45.7 meter (1800 inches) long METRO trains comfortable and user-friendly for all passengers. In addition, it was paid close attention to providing comfortable seating with charging stations and to providing WIFI connection, to ensure maximum comfort, even on longer rides. Moreover, generous luggage racks lighten the journey to the busiest and largest airport in the world, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
«We are extremely excited about this decision and are proud to have the opportunity to support MARTA in their fleet modernization efforts. The first order of METRO trains for the US marks another milestone in the company’s history. After the order for double-deck trains for the Silicon Valley, we are especially pleased that now our METRO trains are being considered for service in the network to the world’s largest airport», said Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US.
Stadler plans to assemble the vehicles for Atlanta at the new plant in Salt Lake City. According to the contract, Stadler is obligated to create at least 60 per cent of the project’s value in the United States.
Group-wide Stadler currently has several METRO projects in production. The METRO trains manufactured for these projects will go into service in Minsk, Barcelona, Berlin, Glasgow and Liverpool, amongst others.
