SOB “flirts” on
Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (SOB) is to exercise an option with Stadler Rail for 14 further FLIRTs (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train) worth CHF 123 million.
Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (SOB) first ordered a series of FLIRT multiple-unit trains from the rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler Rail in 2005. An option for further trains was arranged together with the contract for the first series, and SOB is now exercising this option with its order of 14 further FLIRTs worth CHF 123 million.
The FLIRTs are intended partly to replace existing, older vehicles that no longer meet requirements with regard to performance, comfort and statutory reform such as disability equality legislation. They have also become necessary given rising passenger numbers, increasing train frequency and the implementation of the planned St. Gallen commuter railway system in 2013. Since the commissioning of the St. Gallen commuter railway system is dependent on the referendum in autumn 2010, the contract with Stadler Rail includes a clause stating that the final number of vehicles will not be determined until after the referendum. The new vehicles will be delivered from 2012 onwards, and should all be in operation in time for the timetable change in December 2013.
