Hot FLIRT in the cold north

The first of 32 FLIRT multiple-unit trains for the Helsinki commuter railway system started regular operation today following a one-year test phase. The FLIRT was specially adapted to cope with the Finnish climate, which can experience temperatures as low as –40 degrees Celsius. In addition to extra insulation and a heat recovery system, various other changes were made. This FLIRT is also the first broad-gauge vehicle made by Stadler. Success for Stadler in the rack-and-pinion business

Stadler Rail has won an order, worth around CHF 25 million, for four articulated multiple-unit trains for the rack railway on the Puy-de-Dôme in France’s Massif Central. This is the fourth order Stadler Rail has won for rack-and-pinion rail vehicles this year. The orders, worth a total of around CHF 200 million, are from France, Austria and Switzerland. The Zentralbahn (ZB) has ordered new InterRegio trains for the Brünig line that runs between Lucerne and Interlaken. Stadler Rail will deliver four 7-carriage and six 3-carriage commuter trains. Stadler/AnsaldoBreda win the tender for new trains in the Veneto and Emilia Romagna regions

Railway operators Sistemi Territoriali and Ferrovie Emilia Romagna have announced that the consortium formed by Stadler and AnsaldoBreda has been awarded contracts for the procurement of 32 electric and 2 diesel multiple-unit trains. The order will be worth ap-proximately EUR 200 million. The two contracts will be signed once the administrative deadlines have passed.
