Success for Stadler in Austria
The Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb GmbH (GKB) today awarded the contract for 13 diesel electric articulated drive units (GTW) to Stadler Rail. The order is worth around € 50 million and will be delivered between the second half of 2010 and the end of 2011. The trains will be in service on the Graz – Köflach and Graz – Wies – Eibiswald lines. Following orders for 45 trams for the Grazer Verkehrsbetriebe and two rack-and-pinion locomotives for the Schneeberg railways, this is the third success for Stadler in Austria within a very short time.
GKB goes for success with the GTW
In the presence of the Austrian Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Doris Bures, Mag. Franz Weintögel, Director of the GKB, and Peter Jenelten, Executive Vice President Marketing and Sales of Stadler Rail, signed the contract for the delivery of 13 three-unit GTWs to the GKB. With the increasing number of passengers and the age of the drive units in service at present make this new purchase essential for the GKB. The federal state of Steiermark will take over 25% of the procurement costs. The trains for the GKB are a further development of the fourth generation of the GTW, which has been in service for Arriva in Holland since 2006. Peter Jenelten is delighted with this success. “This is the third order from Austria in a little more than a year and we hope that we will be able to celebrate further successes in our eastern neighbour in the near future.” Stadler has now sold 453 GTWs in 10 countries.
Modern, comfortable vehicles
The vehicles ordered by the GKB are based primarily on the proven Stadler GTW. The trains are air-conditioned, have a handicapped-friendly, closed WC system and a low-floor area of more than 75%. The light passenger compartments with large windows provide 141 seats and 13 folding seats in each train. Up to four trains can run together under multiple control. The vehicles will be manufactured in a light aluminium construction and are therefore low weight. This allows higher acceleration speeds and a considerable reduction in operating costs.
