An Additional FLIRT Order for Stadler Pankow
As of December 2007, 19 three- and five-section electrical type "FLIRT" trains will run under the direction of the Westfalenbahn on the Teutoburger Wald Network’s line between Paderborn, Bielefeld, Münster, Osnabrück and Rheine in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Stadler Pankow GmbH, together with Angel Trains Europa GmbH, Co-logne closed the delivery contract representing a total volume of around 80 mil-lion euros on 23 June 2005.
The FLIRT is a member of the modular vehicle family designed for high-speed Interre-gio and S-Rail transport with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The modern interior is light and friendly and offers a single level passageway and barrier free design in the passenger compartments. The Teuto-FLIRT has at its disposal generous multi-purpose areas with ample space for bicycles, wheelchairs and baby carriages. Correspondingly, the three-section FLIRT offers space for 181 seated and 169 standing passengers, and the five-section FLIRT 300 seats and standing room for 289 persons. Stadler Pankow GmbH, with sites in Berlin and Velten, is a firm belonging to the Swiss Stadler Rail Group, to which two additional locations in Switzerland, Stadler Bussnang AG as well as Stadler Altenrhein AG, also belong. In January 2005 the Stadler Rail Group was enlarged once again by the acquisition of another location, Stadler Weiden GmbH in Germany (Bavaria). Railcars for regional, suburban, and urban trains have been designed, developed, and constructed on a 15,000m² area in Pankow since 1996. In addition, maintenance, modernisation and repairs of vehicles are carried out at this site. The Stadler Group currently employs approximately 1200 persons, a good 300 of whom are in Germany.
