Stadler’s innovations at InnoTrans 2010

In 2010 Stadler Rail Group will once again be attending the largest international trade fair for rail vehicles, InnoTrans in Berlin. Under the motto “Die ZUGkunft gestalten wir” (We are on track to shape the future), Stadler will present itself to the public in Hall 2.2, and showcase three multiple-unit trains and a tram in the open-air section. Thanks to these new types of vehicles, Stadler Rail Group is once again able to prove its innovative strength and expertise in the construction of rail vehicles. The various presentations are as follows:

Platform 6 – FLIRT for Norwegian State Railways (NSB)
– This FLIRT is being presented to the public for the first time. It has five carriages and can reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The vehicle is built to withstand temperatures of up to –40 degrees Celsius, which is why it comes fitted with a heat recovery system that is built into the climate control system, as well as a fan heater and underfloor heating in the door areas.

– Norwegian State Railways have ordered 50 FLIRTs, of which 26 trains will be in service in the Oslo regional commuter railway system and 24 trains will be InterRegio trains on the transport network in southern Norway.

Platform 7 – Double-decker multiple-unit train for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)
– The roll-out of the first double-decker multiple-unit train was celebrated with our customers in Altenrhein, Switzerland, on 4 June this year. Now the latest vehicle from Stadler will also be presented to an international audience in Berlin.

– Following the signing of the contract with SBB in August 2008, it has taken Stadler Rail Group just 21 months to develop, design and build this multiple-unit train. Since then the company has received four further double-decker contracts: the private Westbahn in Austria ordered 7 trains for intercity services on the Vienna–Salzburg route, ODEG (Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH) have contracted us to provide 16 double-decker multiple-unit trains for the commuter railway system on the Berlin–Brandenburg route, BLS ordered 28 trains for the Berne commuter railway system, and SBB ordered a further 24 DOSTO trains for its regional express service. Since the launch of the double-decker family of trains in 2008, Stadler Rail has now sold a total of 125 vehicles in both of its domestic markets of Germany and Switzerland, as well as in Austria.

– The double-decker multiple-unit train on show at the trade fair is equipped with a simulator in the driver’s cab, giving every visitor a “real” sense of what it feels like to travel on this train.

Platform 7 – GTW for Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb (GKB)
– With the articulated multiple-unit train (GTW 2/8) for Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb (GKB), Stadler Rail Group is presenting the fourth generation of this family of multiple-unit trains, which have been constantly and rigorously developed to ensure that they are even better at meeting customers’ needs on the one hand, while also being able to comply with the new norms on the other – such as the new technical requirements of the TSI PRM or the EN 15227 norm governing the crashworthiness of rail vehicles.

– GKB has ordered 13 GTWs, which will be running on the Graz–Köflach and Graz–Wies–Eibiswald routes in south-western Styria by the end of 2011. The spacious design of the boarding platforms with multi-purpose areas, as well as multiple-unit operation for up to four railcars, guarantee flexible service in Styria.

Platform 4 – Variobahn for Bybanen, Bergen, Norway
– Stadler Pankow GmbH is supplying five-part trams to Bergen. The operator Bybanen has ordered 17 Variobahn trams for the completely new tram network that has been built.

– The first part of the route was opened by the Queen of Norway in June this year, and the trains began regular operation. The first Variobahn trams are in service on the route between the centre of Bergen and Nesttun.

– The bidirectional vehicles are 100% low-floored, and the air suspension ensures a constant floor level. The lights on the ceiling are a unique feature of this tram. They can be replaced and changed individually. Various different motifs are printed onto a film and are integrated into the ceiling construction – so that the translucent films give each Variobahn tram their own personal touch.

A glimpse into the future is guaranteed at our booth in Hall 2.2
The Stadler Rail Group booth is a place where future projects and visions are presented. Our focus is on technical innovations and customised concepts for rail vehicles that are able to satisfy all of the customer’s requirements perfectly. Using a timeline, visitors can look ahead as far as the year 2014. The model of the new double-decker multiple-unit trains for Westbahn in Austria is also on show.
