10 years of Stadler in Berlin

The Pankow works was taken over by the Swiss rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler Rail AG in the year 2000 when it was threatened with closure. 2001 saw the first order for seven Regio-Shuttle trains and the acquisition of another site in Velten (Oberhavel district). Continuous developments in the available products and the entry into new market segments allowed the site to be consolidated over the following years. The first successes – 20 FLIRTs for cantus Verkehrsgesellschaft along with 30 Variobahn trains and 6 of the new Tango light rail vehicles for Bochum – came in 2004.

Michael Daum, Director of Stadler Pankow GmbH, cited the main milestones of the last ten years with a degree of pride.

“Since 2000 we have produced and commissioned 400 rail vehicles, which is equivalent to approximately 1,000 carriages. The number of employees has more than trebled. We started off with one production line, and today we have five. Our market was initially based exclusively in Germany, but now our exports account for approximately 25 to 30% of our sales.”

The celebration in the production hall on 5 March 2010 was marked by guest speeches by the governing mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the chairman of Hamburg Hochbahn, Ulrich Sieg.

In addition to Klaus Wowereit and Ralf Christoffers, the Brandenburg Minister for Economic and European Affairs, the guests included other figures in politics, business and local government and the staff of Stadler Pankow GmbH.

Stadler Rail Group, system supplier of customer-specific solutions for rail vehicle construction, has locations in Switzerland (Altenrhein, Bussnang and Winterthur), in Germany (Berlin-Pankow and Velten), in Poland (Siedlce), in Hungary (Budapest, Pusztaszabolcs and Szolnok), in the Czech Republic (Prague), in Italy (Merano) and in Algeria (Algiers). The Group has a workforce of over 3,000 people around the world. The best-known vehicle series from Stadler Rail Group are the articulated multiple-unit trains GTW (501 trains sold), the Regio-Shuttle RS1 (404 trains sold), the FLIRT (547 trains sold), the double-decker DOSTO (73 trains sold) in the railway segment, and the Variobahn (264 trains sold) and the newly-developed Tango (142 trains sold) in the tram segment.
