19 GTW for Region Lombardy
Ferrovienord (FNM Group) has ordered 19 GTW articulated railcars from Stadler Rail. The order has a volume of almost 90 million Euro, and the contract also includes several supplementary options for additional vehicles. The trains will be used on the Milan – Molteno – Lecco and Brescia – Iseo – Edolo lines. Ferrovienord is thereby already the eighth Stadler customer in Italy.
Largest Regional operator
The FNM Group, which is listed on the stock exchange, operates in the North hinterland of Milan, and in the Provinces of Milan, Varese, Como, Novara and Brescia. In all, it operates 800 trains daily and transports 53 million passenger a year. After two hotly contested international tender competitions, Ferrovienord awarded both orders for 19 diesel-electric GTWs to Stadler Rail. These comprised 11 four-part GTW 4/12 for the Milano – Molteno – Lecco line and 8 two-part GTW 2/6 for the Brescia – Iseo – Edolo line. The delivery of the trains will take place from the beginning of 2011.
This order has a special significance for Peter Jenelten, Executive Vice President for Marketing and Sales at Stadler Rail AG: „I am very pleased that our vehicles will now also operate in the economic metropolis of Milan. Up to now, we have already been able to sell a total 489 GTWs in ten different countries, and, like the FLIRT, are now approaching the 500 mark.“
Comfortable vehicles
The fitting in the vehicles are high quality, with the generously dimensioned interiors offering plenty of space for children’s prams, wheelchairs and bicycles. In the bright compartments with large windows, 231 seats per train are available in the GTW 4/12, and 113 seats in the GTW 2/6. The vehicles have a lightweight, aluminium construction, making rapid acceleration possible, which thereby leads to lower operating costs.
