Stadler Rail is disappointed
Stadler Rail notes that the Swiss Federal Railways SBB have awarded the contract to supply double-decker trains for long-distance routes to Bombardier. Stadler Rail is naturally very disappointed by this decision. Peter Spuhler, CEO and majority shareholder of Stadler Rail, said, “SBB’s decision not to award the contract to us will have no short-term impact on jobs at Stadler Rail. The state of our order book guarantees satisfactory capacity utilisation of our Swiss works for the next 18 to 24 months, and SBB’s order for double-decker trains would not have entered full production until 2013. It is extremely difficult to predict the trend in capacity after that time. It is questionable whether Stadler Rail will be able to compensate for the lost SBB contract when the proportion of Swiss production that is exported is currently two-thirds. Another factor that will make things more difficult is the marked weakness of the euro, which is putting us under additional pressure.”
Stadler Rail will decide on its next steps after the SBB debriefing which will be held during May 2010.
